Anyone have any suggestions for a 'new' PC (which will probably be a refurbished, or a used off ebay)? How much disk space? What speed processor? How much RAM? Note: I use my computer for internet, word processing, small games, and spreadsheets. I don't need anything fancy - just general home use by someone who tends to have 15 Firefox tabs, 1 game, and 3 IM programs open at the same time. Anyone have experience with Open Office? Are documents and spreadsheets convertable back and forth with MS Office? Is someone used to MS Office going to have a lot of trouble converting? |

My computer is no longer able to get online. Repair would cost as much as a new comp, so that's what we're doing. Does anyone know if there are any computers for sale that still have XP? I do NOT want Vista! |

"On the scale of very bad ideas this scheme fell somewhere between “New Coke” and “Let’s store poisonous snakes in my pants!”" The "Skippy" of the "Skippy's List" this links to, BTW, is THAT Skippy of THE "Skippy's List: 213 things Skippy is no longer allowed to do in the U.S. Army," which can also be found on the site (look for the link "THE List" at the top). Some of the stranger items on the list are explained at various points in the blog. |

It started to snow last night (or early morning, it was supposed to start around 1 am); by the time it was time to head out to work, we had 4+ inches on the ground. I might have been willing to drive it, but as it turned out my snow cables were too small for my current car, and the snow was on top of a layer of ice which was on top of a layer of water (melted ice/snow, because the ground wasn't frozen). So that didn't happen. We did get out after watching the inauguration (which I would otherwise have missed watching). I got new cables, which I'll put on this evening after I pick up my sister, so she'll be able to do papers at two or three in the morning, when everything that's currently slush has turned back into ice. I stopped by work after I dropped her off - I figured I could get a few hours in, anyway, but it turns out that everyone else was gone, so I went home. (Work requires that some sort of supervisor be there while I'm clocked in.) The snow is tapering off and should stop soon. Depending where I measure, we got between 6.5 and 7.5 inches. Predictions were for around 4-6 inches in my area, so I suppose they didn't do too badly. I was impressed by Obama's speech. It mixed hope with a good dose of realism; there is a hell of a lot to do to fix things, but nothing we are not capable of. I'm going to read the text of the speech (there were a few distractions while it was going on, and I missed a few things) and give it some thought. |

I've been looking at getting a 'new' used palm, since it's almost impossible to charge my old one any more. I'd also been looking at getting an honest-to-god small cat tree for my cats. Instead, this morning, I got the first half of a two-part root canal that destroyed all the progress I'd made in paying off the debts I ran up when I was unemployed. I hope to have enough money to pay for the second half next month. On the other hand, my new dental insurance will probably cover a minuscule portion of the total expense. Root canals are only covered at 10% (after the deductible) for the first year, and my coverage started on the first. On the other hand, I now HAVE dental, health, vision, disability, and life insurance. So really, much less to complain about than I would have otherwise. |

So the new Doctor has been announced, and it is NOT Paterson Joseph. This makes me sad. I'd really been looking forward to seeing him as the new Doctor. That said, I have nothing against Matt Smith. He's kind of cute (though not ginger), and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. |

Question the first: Is there any way to upload a custom mood theme someone else created into Ijay? Question the second: What kind of DSL help desk person doesn't understand that if you can't get to certain web sites in EITHER IE or FF, it's not a browser issue? At least she understood that, having tried to access the sites with both my antivirus and firewall off, it's not one of those causing the problem. Anyone else having trouble getting to livescience.com or twitter.com? (just to name 2 - the ones I can't get to seem pretty random.) |

So they've announced that the next Dr Who will be Paterson Joseph, who is black. And while I think this is a wonderful move on the BBC's part, I can't stop giggling, because of one scene that immediately popped into my head: Doctor: Glows with the regeneration energy. Companion: Stands by anxiously. Doctor: Finishes regenerating. Looks up at companion eagerly. "Am I finally ginger?" Companion: "..." |

So, I'm just had a personal situation blow up on the home front - no details here/now, I may or may not post about it later - but it made me think. Someone: A) calling me and yelling at me, and B) sending me an angry email, put me (temporarily) back down in as bad a depression as I've been in... quite a while. I've been doing well recently. I've been cheerful, mostly functional, a few bad moments but no bad days. And one set of bad interactions crashed that like a house of cards. One of the things I've gotten upset at myself about recently is why I don't do more - more for myself, and more for the house. There are chores that I'm weeks behind on, and I keep promising I'll really start exercising every day, even if only for a few minutes... So I sat down and looked at where all the time is going that I'm not spending on the things I should be doing. And you know where most of it goes? Mood regulating. I swear to god. I spend an absolute bare minimum of two hours a day doing things (different things, depending on my current mood and interest level and energy) to keep myself from getting depressed. If I get enough of it, I can start functioning at a higher level; if I don't get enough, just keeping myself going from one day to the next is problem. Does anyone else out there have to do this? |

Story idea: The Kosigan Saga Story starts with one small change to the Bujold universe - instead of chasing after the imperial courier ship he missed, Ivan decides to sit tight. Miles doesn't get word of the message in time to make it back to his trial, and is convicted of treason in absentia. He discovers this before he sets foot back on imperial territory, and through one means and another, manages to get his sentence partially commuted. Instead of death by exposure, he's stripped of his Vor status, and exiled from Barrayar, Sergyar, and Komarr. A dispirited Miles heads back to his fleet to resume his place as Admiral Naismith. Three years later, with a well-established reputation under his belt, Miles is traveling in the Hegden Hub territory when he has to bail one of his crewmen out of jail - and discovers that his crewman's cellmate is an incognito Emperor Gregor... |

Congressman Paul Broun wants people to know that President-elect Obama is already making moves to establish a dictatorship, just like it happened under Hitler's reign and in Marxist Russia. How do we know this? Well, see, Obama is in favor of a national security force that would assist the military in fighting terrorism. Which is "exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," apparently. Yes, that's the same national security force that Bush was in favor of. But see, now that Obama might be in charge of it, it would become a bad thing. And lead to a ban on private gun ownership, through the logical link of... well, OK, I'm not quite clear on that. But Broun seems to think it follows like night follows day. Maybe something to do with what happened in Germany and Russian, under the theory that if one thing happens that might be vaguely similar to some things that happened there, that everything else that happened in those places will naturally follow. Plus, wanting a national security force makes Obama a Marxist. I'm still looking up details on why that didn't apply to Bush, or maybe conservatives are naturally immune? NOT, Broun wants to be clear, that he's comparing Obama to Hitler. He clearly says he's not! It's just that "[y]ou have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany.... What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road." All of which proves to me that AOL members & readers are generally Here's MY poll: Poll #2694 How Crazy is Broun Open to: All, results viewable to: All How Crazy is Congressman Broun?

Specifically, to those imbicels who are trying to argue that Obama isn't really the first black president / a black american / 'really' african-american, because he's half white/mixed race/'mulato' / not a descendant of slaves / didn't have parents/grandparents who suffered under the institutionalized racism of Jim Crow / whatever. SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU DO NOT GET A VOICE IN THIS! Don't you get it? You do not have the right to define who is and who is not black! Chist. |

Did I ever think to mention that I'm no longer unemployed? *Thinks* I don't think I did. I have a job! Started my second week today! Less pay than I wanted, but much closer to home so I'm saving a fortune on gas, plus virtually no traffic - I got home around 5:35 today. So far, I'm doing a lot of filing - said filing will get more complicated as time goes on, and a rotation on the front desk will be added. Front desk is the responsibility of A/P, which is one of the departments I'll be working with, along with G/L, and part of A/R (I'm going to be working with the A/P vault, at least). It's the... regional? corporate office (franchise) for those service stations that change your car's oil in a 'jiffy'. :D I really like the place, and the people seem great. So far, the work is interesting - or rote enough that I can do it while thinking of other things, so yay! Plus, after probation, I can get health insurance! |
